You shouldn't have to taste your lawn treatments!

The future of lawn care is here

You can have a lush lawn without harmful herbicides and pesticides and it starts with these core steps and amendments:

  • Proper Drainage
  • Proper pH
  • Micro Biota
  • Aeration
  • Sand + Compost Amendments

Why Lawns Fail in Central New York

  • clay soil- is beneficial in terms of nutrients and holding moisture (often too much!)
  • compaction- the more you drive on it and weight of snow pack can make new low permeability zones, leading to ponding.
  • trapped moisture- it's in there for root use but can the roots get to it?
  • shallow roots- many factors contribute to shallow roots- does your lawn rip up easily when mowing?
  • runoff- water moving as sheet flow using hard surfaces and slopes hitches a ride and tends to punish it's landing area; sometimes its your foundation, patio, driveway, or a "trouble" are in your lawn.
  • snowmelt- can act like runoff particularly that the ground is already saturated and the soil cannot accept any more at the moment. "Seats Taken"
  • poor grading- Relatively flat lawns don't help water runoff; for sandy or well draining lawns, this is usually fine, but clay soils will stay saturated for long periods.
  • stressed turf-if you're having a treatment company dosing your lawn routinely, its important to take a pause if weather becomes too wet, too hot, or too dry; they want to get paid for the treatments and keep up workflow but not often beneficial for your grass/lawn.
  • overreliance on chemicals- Many are designed for one thing- to kill. Are we prescribing a problem when we sign up to eradicate problems that don't exist yet? There has been well documented journals on tolerance build up and ultimate immunity to herbicides and pesticides, making "lawn treatments" less effective or ultimately non effective in cases; this can lead to dosage increases, and "new and improved  formulas" for weeds and bugs.  It's not our business to tell you how safe and effective their methods are, so we just focus on out competing weeds by creating the best environment or ecosystem for lawn health!
  • Standing water- can drown out the roots and encourage moss and other weeds that thrive in wet environments.
  • Moss- indicative of highly acidic soil and poor drainage.
  • Thin turf- has many stress contributors like compaction, mowing too low, and generally poor soil profiles.
  • Hard compacted soil- Most of our local area is predominantly clay soil; intuitively, the heavy traffic , rolling lawns with rollers, snow weight are causes for compaction where a lawn seemingly does not want to allow infiltration.
  • Puddling- caused by compaction, heavy clay and lack of grade- water will sit in dips in the lawn.
  • Runoff from roofs and driveways- we call this sheet flow and often the largest contributor to wet lawns and basements, therefore this is the biggest priority to remedy first!
  • Pet wear- IYKYK!
  • Heat stress- limit mowing and fertilization during this time of slow growing and high temps; Avoid fertilization and other chemical stressors during this time.
  • Root suffocation- Lack of oxygen to the roots; too much water; poor drainage.

What can be done?

Core Aeration: Taking these plugs out of the soil allows it to breathe and accept water and amendments down to the roots; and is considered the single best thing you can do for your lawn health!

Aeration and Seeding over goes perfectly together! call for pricing as size of lawn and seed prices vary.

Initial aeration and recurring

annually or biannually, or when prescribed for drainage reasons.

Aeration + Lime ammendment

For drawing water from clay soils and raising pH levels.

Aeration + Carbon Pro-G biological soil amendment

Increases nutrient availability and optimizes soil health and enhanced turf greening.

What can be done?

Top Dressing: This is how the pros do it in turf management!!

Think of it as mechanically changing your lawn instead of throwing chemicals and heavy fertilizers, or even ripping out everything and starting from scratch (which can be done), we highly recommend top dresisng

Top Dressing is the process of applying a thin layer of organic material on top of the lawn, typically compost or sand, or a mix; the benefits are numerous....

  • improves soil quality by adding nutrients and feeding lawn
  • improves water retention for sandy soil
  • levels the grades for a smoother lawn and fills low spots.
  • reduces thatch
  • improves drainage
  • gives a fresh seedbed for aeration holes to thicken lawn a natural way.
